The Grade II listed Old Bridge, opened in 1865, is looked after by the 600 year old Rochester Bridge Trust, which owns and maintains a number of crossings over the River Medway in Kent. They also own and maintain two sections of embankment – called Esplanades.

When the wrought iron gate to the Old Bridge Abutment Gallery was damaged, knowing our experience of working on Grade I and Grade II listed sites, the Trust asked us to repair it. We fabricated a purpose-made journal and pin, took them to site, carefully removed the wrought iron gate and damaged journal, welded the new pin in place, re-hanged the gate and left it in good working order.

We were asked to repair a section of the wrought iron handrail that had been badly damaged by a falling branch.

We cut out and removed the damaged wrought iron handrail section and made up a new section to replace it in the same design. We then galvanised the new section, prepared and primed it, and reinstated it on site.

We were asked to provide safe access over a stream to a garden area by replacing the wooden sleepers on the bridge and installing new steel handrails.

We took out and removed the rotten sleepers, and replaced them with reclaimed treated oak crossing sleepers strong enough to take the weight of lawn tractors. Then we fitted galvanised kee clamp handrails on both sides of the bridge to provide a support for anyone crossing the stream.
