We collected one of the damaged door tracks to use as a sample and fabricated two bespoke curved tracks: one right and one left curved – both 30mm deep x 20mm wide with a 3mm wall. Ensuring that the tracks didn’t loose their shape when rolled was tricky, but our guys are used to such challenges, and we delivered the tracks, curved to the correct angles to the gallery for fitting by their maintenance team.

Door Closing Repairs Westminster

Our door closer specialists have carried out door closing repairs on various doors at the Grade I Listed gallery in Westminster, including the heavy main wooden entrance doors, the four leaf revolving glass doors just inside the entrance, as well as fire doors, and doors to galleries, lifts, changing rooms and toilets. Sometimes, this has just meant adjusting the door closers, at others we have had to fit new door closing units, including manufacturing and installing non-standard components, such as the top centre pin and bushes.

We were called in because the right-hand gate leaf was stuck and leaning out of line. Having assessed the gate we thought the bottom journal was worn and, when we removed the gate, this proved to be correct. We also discovered the pin had worn away. Gallery personnel decided that as the journal on the other gate leaf was the same age, we should replace it too as a good preventative maintenance measure, so we removed it with the right-hand gate leaf.

At our workshop, we cut off the bottom section of the right-hand gate leaf where the pin was, fabricated a new section incorporating a bottom pin and welded it back onto the gate leaf. We also fabricated phosphorus bronze journals for each of the gate leaves. Everything was then re-assembled and checked at our workshop to ensure it worked correctly.

Returning to site, we dug out the bottom journals and concreted the new ones in place and left the concrete to cure. The following day, we took both gate leaves back to site, re-hanged them and left them in good working order.

We were asked by the gallery to design a handrail to match an existing one on another staircase, apply for historic and local authority planning permission for it, then – once this had been obtained – fabricate and install it. We did this, and the handrail is now in place, looking as good as the original it was intended to match.
